AIR CONDITIONING DAY
We wait as long as we can, but a week of 90 degree temperatures harkens its time to invite an air conditioner into our bedroom window. We don’t have an effective way to cool the house with this tiny thing, but it surely makes sleep bearable. We also install the air conditioner for Karen, the tenant of the house we lease. The following day, we try not to mention the sore back and biceps as if our body can be tricked into not noticing. It’s a favorite ritual because Keith always buys me an ice cream cone when we’re done. I am a good and worker, and help is hard to get these days.

CATCH-UP ENDURO #1: SLENDER STALK
I have fallen (and continue to fall) far behind my planned publication dates. Today began a rousing game of catch-up, painful as it may be. I shared my 48-poem “Loving Keith” today in an overdue May issue of Slender Stalk (monthly poems by mary). I leveraged the daisy theme that characterizes The Daily Daisy website. Visually daisies are one of my favorite flowers. Spiritually, I admire that they grow like weeds. Their humility is inspiring.
FATHERS DAY LOVE
There’s a long list of fathers to whom we extended our love and appreciation. We also celebrated Keith with stuff he loves: (1) a box of copious orange reels for his beloved weed whacker, (2) three summer cotton shirts - L.L. Bean, (3) directional lights for his Model A, (4) a super pencil sharpener that even sharpens charcoal pencils, (5) an old wood antique box with a fancy handle and brass latch, and (6) a book of love poems from his loving wife. It was a perfect day!
BUSKER MAGIC
As if Father’s Day wasn’t fabulous enough, after reading through the love poems book I made for him, we made a quick trip to Festival Foods for chocolate eclairs. It yielded some unexpected Father’s Day magic, for sure. A couple from Italy with their daughter in tow were busking in the parking lot. Exalting is the only word for his violin performance of “I have loved you for a thousand years.” We were in a tender mood after the love poems, and the love song put us over the top. And “I will love you for a thousand more.” (We emptied our wallets in gratitude for the enchantment).
PAPA’S FAVORITE PIZZA
The price to delicious ratio is over the moon. Keith declined fancy restaurants and even nice take-out. His choice of entree for Father’s Day is his favorite Eaton’s Supreme pizza (sausage, onions, mushrooms, green pepper, and extra sauce. So despite the heat dome over our house, I cranked up the oven and baked this beauty. We even had enough leftover for tomorrow’s lunch! Happy Dad with a happy tummy.

LOVING KEITH - THE BOOK
I’ve been dabbling at this project for a long time, and decided this month to bite the bullet and make it one of my second quarter quests to get it done. I have sacrificed maintenance tasks (my house is picked up but needs a good cleaning. I’ve gotten take-out from a lot of restaurants in the past few weeks (which is expensive and not diet-friendly). I’ve jettisoned a host of things from my task list (like newsletters, sorry). But I finished it today and will upload it tomorrow just in time for Father’s Day. There is a chunk missing from 2010 anddd earlier, but I can’t find them (hope I didn’t toss them). The rest are compiled in one little book of love poems to Keith written by his wife. Ta Da! I hope he loves it!

RAILROAD TIE
We love in a Civil War era house. Over the years, we’ve used ailroad ties for borders and retaining walls. Many people think we are trying to leverage the “timber” thing to be congruent with the house’s age. Then they find out Keith is a railroad journeyman, and the surmise the real reason. Free ties. Keith replaced a bunch of really old ones last year that we had to buy since he no longer has connections. He made a nice retaining wall in the front of the house, but one tie was significantly lighter than the rest. It irked me every time I arrived home. Today, after an errand, I drove up and the albino tie had been spray-tanned by my exceedingly artistic and loving husband. I didn’t even pull in the driveway. I drove straight to Dairy Queen and bought him a Turtle Ice Cream Cake with frosting that spelled out “railroad tie.” We get these about once a decade so he was over the moon!
FLAG DAY
I am ashamed to say it has been almost two months since my friend Larry lent me this book. In my defense, I first had to finish what I’d started before this undertaking. What better day than Flag Day to launch our first summer book read: Bill of Obligations by Richard Haase. It’s about the 10 “obligations” of Americans, in contrast to the 10 “rights” memorialized in the Bill of Rights. My role is to read the book aloud and Keith is supposed to make sound effects. Summer reads are usually reserved for beach fiction or YA fiction. We’ll see how it works out.

OPERATION TRANSFORMATION
My newest passion is reading about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and what near term (3-5 years) impacts it may have on the future. I’ve amassed enough information that I’m dangerous, as they say. I am starting to write a transition plan which I am planning to have AI help me with. There’s much to consider for all ages, even codgers like Keith and me. We want to enjoy its wonders while we can and prepare for the potential challenges. I am so grateful to live at the beginning of this mind-boggling change for all humanity. Utopia or Death, here we come!

CLOTH LOVE
As we celebrated Raggedy Ann & Andy Day, I found their humility made the occasion feel auspicious. Of course, it compelled me to write this ode to this cloth duo of love.
RAGGEDY ANN & ANDY DAY
I can’t believe I was missing this holiday for 73 years! I discovered it last month and resolved to give them their due. Hmmm? How do two old folks celebrate dolls from their childhood. How about some sort of baked bean slop and biscuits served in an old pie plate. Seems congruent with the A&A vibe, right. Invite the dolls who live upstairs in the toy room. Chat about their enduring innocence and goodness. Then write a poem. Maybe next year we’ll graduate to more ado. Perhaps I’ll write a storybook and Keith can illustrate it?
