What is a daily ritual or routine that you're thankful for, and why?
Consciously savor one routine or activity today. Notice the details and find gratitude in simplicity.
GRATITUDE IN THE EVERYDAY: A MINDFUL PAUSE
In the whirlwind of life – between classes, extracurriculars, and social media – it's easy to get caught up in a tornado of activity. But what if you could find pockets of calm in this storm? That's where the magic of everyday gratitude comes in.
Gratitude isn't just for big moments like acing a test or scoring an A. It's about finding joy in the small stuff, the things we often overlook. It's about taking a mindful pause to appreciate what's around us.
Try this: Next time you're rushing to class or to your job, stop for just five seconds. Take a deep breath and notice one thing you're grateful for. Maybe it's the cool breeze on your face, the sound of laughter from your friends, or even the fact that you remembered all your books today. This tiny moment of appreciation can shift your entire mood.
When I would drive to work each day to Mayville or Oshkosh, sometimes I’d be pretty stressed out by what was on the agenda for the day. As I navigated Highway 41, I would go through my senses. What am I smelling, tasting, hearing? What am I feeling in my body? What beauty am I seeing on this this familiar drive. The sunlight on the truck ahead of me, the music on the radio, my favorite perfume. These almost microscopic moments of gratitude became a daily anchor, bringing me back to the present - even when I felt overwhelmed. And the secret about the present, it is always there to fill you with wonder and gratitude.
You can infuse gratitude into your daily routines in many other ways too:
Morning ritual: Before checking your phone, think of one thing you're looking forward to today.
Lunchtime appreciation: As you eat, savor each bite and be thankful for the nourishment.
Work gratitude: Before starting your assignments, acknowledge one thing you've learned today.
Bedtime reflection: End your day by recalling three positive moments, no matter how small.
Remember, gratitude isn't about forcing positivity. It's about noticing the good that already exists in your life. It’s savoring that for a few moments extra to really take it in. It's a skill that gets stronger with practice, like a muscle you're training.
By cultivating everyday gratitude, you're not just improving your mood – you're developing a life skill that will serve you to your last breath. So, why not start now? Take a pause, look around, and find one thing to be grateful for. Your future self will thank you for it. - Granny & Paw
