What is the role of forgiveness in spiritual growth?

FORGIVE

Release my resentments
the anger within
the weight of the bitter
the burden of sin

The guilt and the shame
like stones on my chest
I lay them all down
and put them to rest

No thoughts of revenge
no grip of control
I open my hands
and tend to my soul

Let love be my mission
compassion my guide
I stand in the mirror
and set down my pride

My soul now unburdened
makes room to repair
to welcome the light
to breathe in new air

To truly be free
to wake and to live
I open my heart
I choose to forgive
