Ideas for Chapter 2 - The People Who Shaped You

The "People Who Shaped You" section stands as a testament to the profound influence of those who have walked alongside you. This chapter unfolds practical and nuanced ways to seamlessly integrate these significant figures into your memoir, creating a canvas that beautifully encapsulates the impact of relationships on your life's mosaic.
(a) It always makes sense to start with a list. Grab a cup of coffee, a tablet, and pen. Sit quietly and create your list of the people that shaped you.

(b) Five Great Ways to Incorporate the “People Who Shaped You” in your Mosaic Memoir:

You can add to this list as more people occur to you. You may want to approach this chapter in sections such as Mentors, Friends, Colleagues, Influencers, and Family.

  • Mentorship Moments: Share the wisdom imparted by mentors whose guidance has been instrumental in your personal and professional growth. Consider creating a special block or using a different font or color to emphasize and call out their invaluable pieces of advice. For instance, if a mentor shared the mantra "never borrow or lend with friends," give it prominence in your narrative.

  • Friendship Chronicles: Chronicle the enduring bonds with cherished friends, capturing the shared moments of joy, support, and resilience. To deepen these connections, consider reaching out to reconnect. Whether through a phone call, a coffee meeting, or a heartfelt letter expressing gratitude, these gestures can enhance the lasting impact of your friendship.

  • Colleague Connections: Reflect on colleagues or mentors in your professional journey, highlighting pivotal moments and lessons learned. This is another opportunity to express your gratitude and reconnect.

  • World Influencers: Recognize individuals who have inspired you or who have left an enduring impact on your life. Capture the essence of that impact. This may include historical figures, role models, etc. Not all shaping is done by people we know personally.

(c) Handling Sensitive Stories:

Approach these stories with sensitivity and respect. Sometimes we are shaped by someone’s handling of adversity. Be cautious in details you reveal that might shame or embarrass the person.

(d) Interviewing the People Involved:

To flesh out the full picture of these relationships, it may be interesting to talk with the person involved and ask them how they saw you, why they helped you, and what they experienced within the relationship.

(e) Miscellaneous Ideas:

Dialogue will add life to your stories about these people. Include bits of conversations to create a better picture of the person and your relationship.

This is one of my favorite memoir chapters. It overflows with gratitude and appreciation. As you reflect on the people that have helped make you the person you are today, you can’t help but feel very loved. Whether through mentorship, friendships, family ties, professional connections, or community influences, we begin to realize, if we look close enough, each and every relationship contributes in some way to your life. Ready to celebrate these folks? Let's enrich your memoir with the imprints of those who have shaped your narrative.
