What is one way you practice self-kindness or self-care?
Engage in an act of self-kindness. Whether it's a soothing bath, a favorite meal, or quiet time, prioritize yourself.
THE INNER GARDEN: THE ESSENCE OF SELF-KINDNESS
Imagine your mind as a garden. The thoughts you nurture are the seeds you plant, and the way you treat yourself is how you tend to those seeds. Self-kindness is the act of being a gentle, compassionate gardener to your own inner landscape. It's about cultivating a positive environment within yourself, which in turn allows you to spread positivity to others.
Keith and I both have known people in our lives who were very high-achieving. There were some who constantly pushed themselves to the limit. Sometimes they would even get down on themselves for even a small mistake. They just never seemed to feel satisfied with their accomplishments. This internal negativity began to affect their relationships and happiness.
But that is just some of the high-achievers. The others are different. They practice self-kindness. They treat themselves with the same compassion they would show a friend. Their inner dialogue is kind, forgiving, and encouraging, instead of filled with self-criticism. Somewhere in life, they learned to celebrate their efforts, not just their achievements. They are not only happier and more balanced, but also find themselves being more patient and kind to others.
Self-kindness creates a wellspring of positivity that overflows into all aspects of life. Here are some ways you can practice self-kindness:
Practice positive self-talk: Be mindful of your inner dialogue. Speak to yourself as you would to a dear friend.
Set realistic expectations: It's good to have goals, but make sure they're achievable. Remember, progress is more important than perfection.
Take care of your physical health: Proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are acts of self-kindness.
Allow yourself to make mistakes: Errors are opportunities for growth, not reasons for self-punishment.
Practice self-compassion: When you're going through a tough time, acknowledge your pain and comfort yourself.
Celebrate your achievements: Take time to recognize and appreciate your accomplishments, no matter how small.
Set boundaries: It's okay to say no to things that overwhelm you or don't align with your values.
Engage in activities you enjoy: Make time for hobbies and interests that bring you joy and relaxation.
Remember, self-kindness isn't selfish. People often compare it to securing your own oxygen mask before helping others on a plane – you need to take care of yourself so you can take care for others.
As you go about your day, pay attention to how you treat yourself. Are you nurturing yourself with kindness, or are you allowing negativity to grow? Challenge yourself to be as kind to yourself as you are to others. You might be surprised at how this inner kindness blossoms into a more positive, compassionate approach to the world around you.
