The "Grand" Dinner

THE “GRAND” DINNER
We had a very special evening at Gino’s Italian restaurant. It was “The Grand Dinner” for grandparents and grandchildren of the Johnston Clan. Jaspir and Ada enjoyed their favorite pizza. Roland twirled spaghetti and meatballs, while Paw indulged in a triple sized Calzone. I ordered a cup of the steak and potato soup. The waitress said I could get a bowl for a dollar more, so I agreed. They served me a cup of soup set inside an empty bowl. Crazy Italians! We all loved the breadsticks and we loved each other. Afterwards, we headed to Artesian for a fancy caramel-lemon muffin that was hand-made by Ada! Then we todddled home and slept soundly in the after-glow of amore!

Daisy: Grapevine Grapple

GRAPEVINE GRAPPLE
When Keith was a little boy, there was a large brick chimney near the back door of his house. It was covered with grapevines. He’s a sentimental man and loves having grapevines in an area behind his studio we call The Vineyard. It makes for a very French vibe for dining and I love it too. Although the grapes have become jam a few times over the year, they are mostly for the birds. One of Keith’s annual rituals is trimming the vines and cutting the overgrowth off his studio roof. We feel so ancient when we tend living things.

PHOTO CONTEST ENTRIES - MARY
I entered all four photo categories just like Keith. My favorite is Shadow Walker in b/w. It is Keith and I recognize those work pants. They arer in my laundry almost every week. I love the sea glass color of the sssea gull, but it is a trite subject. I thought my title crapped it up a little. Then there is that gorgeous window at Thelma Center for the Arts. I love it, but my photo doesn’t capture how magnificent it is. Last, my cousin Arnie and his wife Perry out to lunch with us . A widow and widower who found love after love. It makes me so happy!

PHOTO CONTEST ENTRIES - KEITH
Keith entered all four categories with his photos. My favorite is his portrait of Lilly. I think it is “painting-worthy.” His photo of calf tats on a guy he knows created a little controversy. Some people thought those were thighs, not calves. He actually only photographed one leg and photo-shopped a second to make dueling ravens. He’s also very proud of his keychain which was a gift to him from a different guy he knows. He has a lot of interesting and generous friends. Last, is me weeding the spaces between the stones. I refer to that and sweeping as my Sisyphus Tasks.

Daily Daisy Love Notes

DAILY DAISY LOVE NOTES
Although I am exceedingly grateful for Keith, I was trying to find a way to remind myself to share that appreciation more. I was inspired by a Daily Wisdom Quotes project I did last year. It will be part of my bedtime routine - making a little love note of thankfulness for something that happened during the day. Then i’ll text it to him during breakfast so I can savor the hug and kiss that comes back to me. What a great way to start the day!

Jim's Birthday Bash 2024

What crazy fun we made at Jim’s birthday party. I told him he had to make a list of 66 things he could do to make his 66th year special. I said we would start the list for him with some recommendations. Everyone except Jen and I were sincere. Such straight-shooters. I can’t remember Jen’s warped idea, but I started the list off with mine: “Choke a hooker, but not until she dies. Just until she passes out so you can leave without paying. It got a good laugh when Jim read the list to us. The family gave him some great gifts: homemade gummies, a jar of invisible Pookah Treats (long story) and I am forgetting what Cash & Carey. I love that man! Happy Birthday, James.

Feliz Cumpleaños Jen!

We made some birthday fun for Jen at Riviera Maya where the fantastic food elevates any occasion. The folks there made the traditional fuss and no one is a better sport than Jen. Aside from my admiration for the Renaissance woman she is, I feel blessed to have her for a sister-iin-law. She has brought so much happiness and love to John’s life, I will be eternally grateful.

Aloha BBQ Chicken Pizza

There is only one take-out pizza that I ever crave: Jet’s Alohha BBQ Chicken pizza! There is only one time I can’t resist the memory of that sauce, a crunch of pinecapple, and a nice plump crust: that would be on Friday Pizza Nights. Because my husband is the kindest man ever, he has deferred to my pizza preference three weeks in a row as of tonight’s festivities. You see, Jets started texting me every Friday at 5:00p to remind me my last order was this favorite of favorite pizzas one week ago - and with the click of a finger, I can eat it again. So I do. I am a mindless automaton, I know. Keth was even kind enough to let me lounge on the couch after a terribly exhausting day. I waited like a queen to be served this feast., I feel so pampered. I need to block caller on Jets though. I am turning into a plump crust.

My little “Death” project would be so much less without the beautiful photographs. In gratitude, today I added Photo Credits to the end of the book. This is page one of two pages. Never will I publish an e-book or any other type of significant work without doing this. Reminds me of the old time contact sheets. I think my book is visually stunning thanks to all these photos. It is said that some people rely on the kindness of strangers; I rely on the talent of strangers. I think I will also add a note of thanks to my editor/collaborators: AI and Keith.

Valentines Day

Valentines Day 2024 once again honored our $2 gift limit. Keith stole a paper lace heart off the wall at McDonald’s this morning and affixed it with the used tape to the top of my large Diet Coke. I was classier and gave him a proper card. On closer inspection, you will notice it was received from friends and repurposed. Priceless. Literally! We lunched at Riviera Maya where Keith hoarded all the food and I licked a bowl of salsa. But the Tres Leches cake was stupendous. I will be going back tomorrow for another piece for Keith’s birthday if I can swing it. As you can see, our dinner table was unused. Neither of us were up to our planned fancy dinner after the Valentine food orgy lunch. We will celebrate more on the week-end and turn our attention to Keith’s  birthday tomorrow. I hope my loved ones filled the day with love and that someone stole a heart and gave it to them.

Life Lessons Love Letter

I conceptualized this project almost two years ago and it took me quite a bit of last year to get it organized and refined. I called it Life Keys, made a website, didn’t like it. So I changed it to be themed as a Greek Philosopher named Dork of the Basement, made a website, didn’t like it. Then I settled on Life Lessons, made a website, and loved it! So now I have to write out all the content to hang on the topic structure I built. My first crack was launchhedd today in the form of thhe Life Lessons newsletter for the grandkids. I am already changing the format, I think. But I am off and flying high! The photo is Presley and Lilly from their earlier childhood. In the letter, I encourage them to revisit their childhood to reconnect with the things they love and their authentic self.

Hobbit Day

We ate supper in front of the big screen with the lights off tonight to enjoy a favorite movie: The Hobbit. An M&M sundae took the place of birthday cake as we toasted J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthday with our mug of mead. Judging by all the celebrations I loaded into January’s calendar, I think I’m trying to cheer us up after a rough patch. It always works for me to take a litte time to savor life’s wonders - of which LOTR ranks high. It holds a very special place in my heart. It was the first book we read together and it felt like it was our first big adventure together. Humanity owes him a debt of gratitude for not just his work, but all the writers he inspired. "It is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk, that keeps the darkness at bay."

Cicero Day

I sure love those Stoic philosophers and enjoyed celebrating Cicero’s birthday. I decided I should go a day early because his real birthday tomorrow is reserved for the very special J.R.R. Tolkien. I have some special hobbit fun planned for Keith and me and don’t want these two giants to have to share the spotlight. Cicero is the second most influential man on Western Civilization after Jesus. He is pretty much responsible for all the elements of liberal democracy, like separation of powers, rule of law, and stuff like that. Considering the weight of his contribution to humanity, we don’t know near enough about him. His speeches and writings are legendary and what kept these ideas from fading.

Unleash the Wolf Walkers!

We signed up for this indoor walking club some time ago, but the weather had not driven us indoors until today when ice glazed our walkways. We donned our little badges and ventured off into a labyrinth of hallways, byways, dead ends, and super-sized ramps. It was delightful exploring the building and greeting other wolf walkers. So interesting and comfortable did we find this that we actually DOUBLED our walking time! (Next time I plan to howl at passers-by to make it more exciting for them.

The Advent Ritual

Keith and I each did our first entry into Chapter One of our Mosaic Memoir. Mine is about my mom’s Nativity scene when I was little and an unsettling tradition I carried forward. You can read all about it by clicking the image. I also spent about 2 hours putting together a comprehensive vision and strategy for documenting our family history which includes dispatch of memorabilia, photos, video, heirlooms, etc. I really hope we get this done. It feels overwhelming, but everything worthwhile always does!
