golden week | stoicism

The Golden Week in Japan is a collection of four May holidays all clustered in a one week period. This year, Miss Ladybug decided to link her monthly Writing Challenge for May to the Golden Week: one haiku per day for seven days.

Golden Week has now ended and the kids have until later this week to get their haiku submitted making them eligible for the Golden Week Grand Prize. Miss Ladybug’s prizes are usually books, but sometimes, games, toys, or money. We are all wondering what this month’s prize will be.

I thought this sounded like too much fun for just kids, so I signed up to write a haiku-a-day for seven days too!

I decided to make my seven haiku a mini-collection with the theme of Stoicism. Classical haiku usually have nature themes. I thought this would work because Stoicism is a philosophy about human nature.

I hope she likes my poems. I know I’m a bit beyond the age cut-off, but I thought she might consider my entry if I could find a way to impress her. That’s when I got the idea to send a photo of me with my stoic face. I think it will show Miss Ladybug my sincerity.

GRANNY’S SINCERE FACE

On the final day of Golden Week, which this year coincided with Cinco de Mayo, I made Sweet & Sour Pork with rice, an apple salad, and, of course, fortune cookies. I got to use my favorite “pagoda” plates to keep with the Asian theme. I love them so much.

Then I read my haiku to Keith. He pretended to be interested. So sweet.

Here’s my haiku for Golden Week.
