Project Feeder Watch

CORNELL LAB OF ORNITHOLOGY NEEDS YOUR HELP

Feeder Watch is a super exciting citizen science project for kids who love birds and want to help scientists understand how they behave in the wild. Yes, you heard that right. You get to actually help scientists! The project is run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and it invites participants to record observations of the birds that visit their backyard feeders.

To get started with Feeder Watch, kids will need to set up a bird feeder in their backyard and begin recording data about the birds that visit. This includes the species of bird, the date and time of the sighting, and the number of birds observed.

One of the great things about Project Feeder Watch is that you can participate at your own pace. You can choose to observe for as little or as much time as you like, and you can submit your data on a weekly or monthly basis.

Project Feeder Watch is a great way for you to learn about the different bird species that live in your area. By observing the birds who visit your feeder, you can learn about their behaviors, habitats, and food preferences. You can also use this opportunity to practice your identification skills, using field guides or bird identification apps to help you identify the birds you see.

In addition to being a fun and educational activity, participating in Project Feeder Watch is an important way for you to contribute to scientific research. The data that you collect is used by scientists to track changes in bird populations over time, as well as to study migration patterns and other aspects of bird behavior.

Project Feeder Watch is also a great way for you to connect with nature and develop a deeper appreciation for the environment. By observing the birds in you backyard, you can learn about the role that birds play in the local ecosystem of the water animals, and land under the care of the Artesian Nature Coalition, and the importance of preserving habitat for all the amazing creatures who live there with you.

To get started with Project Feeder Watch, you can visit the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's website and download the Project Feeder Watch kit. The kit contains everything you need to get started, including instructions for setting up a bird feeder and recording observations. It’s an awesome kit!

Once you have your feeder set up and are ready to start observing, you will submit their data to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's citizen science program, It is called eBird and you can read more about that database HERE. This database contains millions of records of bird observations from around the world and is used by researchers to study bird populations, migration patterns, and more.
