May Day | Cupcake Mess

Sometime Around 2002ish

I think one of the most important responsibilities of “The Granny” is to create memories around the family and be the keeper and creator of traditions. Back then, I used paper scrapbooks to archive these precious times together. The following are two pages from the May Day celebration in the yard of Jaspir and Ada’s home on Greenwood Street.

We delivered May Baskets to Grandma Shirley’s house and then to Aunt Mollie’s house. It was so thrilling to ring the bell and run away. The kids found great hiding places in the bushes at both places. We even tricked mom and dad with their baskets when we got home.

After all the basket fun, it was time to make a May Pole and dance until we got hungry. We got beautiful May Day cupcakes with flowers made of frosting. Jaspir ate his enthusiastically, while Ada needs a little work on frosting management.

Here are some extra photos I stumbled upon recently. My scrapbooks are focused more on the children, so there are some sweet memories below of a few of the adult May Basket recipients, as well as some additional snaps of the kids.

If you look along the left and right sides of the photos, you will see little arrows that let you toggle through the stack. < goes left and > goes right.

Now, watch, I will make a little instruction right now in a different font for the people that only look at pictures. If you are reading this, you can feel smug because you are a reader. Here you go non-readers…

BEFORE YOU GO

If you are wondering what that little bit of text on the second scrapbook page says, give up. It is generally unreadable in the photo. It is a short history of May Day that I copied or edited from somewhere long ago. I don’t remember where. Sorry. Here’s a close-up.
